Did you know that a pen and a piece of paper is the cheapest form of therapy? Poetry and other forms of writing are proven ways to reduce stress which is why Girls Build LA and Poetry club has teamed up together to provide a poetry workshop today at lunch in T206! This workshop is led by Get Lit Player and Girls Build LA member Alexis Martinez focused on how poetry has helped her be more mindful with her mental health. Pens and Paper will be provided and bring your friends!

We were pleasantly surprised to hear Pharrell William encouraging the audience to practice of MINDFULNESS!!!^^^ After months of anticipation, Girls Build LA @ Grand Arts finally attends the long awaited screening of Hidden Figures!
From the pannel of artists to the exclusive screening shown to the thousands of LA County students, this once in a lifetime event sparked a lot of motivation in our Grand Arts team. We had the privilege to listen to such passionate and accomplished speakers of all different professional and ethnic backgrounds, and we even had the opportunity to view a live stream from the Internaltional Space Station, where a female astronaut's inspiring words moved a generation of female middle school and high school attendees. Perhaps the most empowerring segment of the event was when the four pannelists shared their most inspirational quotes. Among these, Janelle Monet's said" When we stick together as girls, as sisters, as women, we can achieve anything." Heart-warmed and teary-eyed, the entire event marked a significant moment in our lives and inspired us to follow our dreams, as ambitious as they may be, and to embrace who we are. With students walking out, we noticed that our school had a lot of anger and strong feelings having to do with the election. We were inspired by messages left on New York's subway walls after the election and decided to try it out at our school. We also had Mandalas to color and music to help students relax and come together.
Last year's Girls Build LA team started making stress balls during lunch activities and also at the Mindfulness Fair. We saw that it was a great hit and that people benefited from it so we decided to continue making stress balls this year. On Thursday, October 27, we launched GBLA year 2 at our school with a stress ball making activity during lunch.
Orientation day! We got to see what the Challenge was all about and got to see all the other girls all over LA who had received the grant as well! Marks the new start of VAPA'S GBLA 2016-2017! |
