Cortines School of VAPA # of GUESTS 1000+ students, staff, parents throughout the day DESCRIPTION A table full of decorations and photos dedicated to our family members that have passed and women in history who inspire us. There can be food and things that represent the women the altars are dedicated to. One of the GBLA members brought Arroz con Leche made by her grandmother to pass out to people who visited our GBLA Altar. PURPOSE The purpose is for Girls Build LA to participate in school events and build recognition for our projects. Dia de Muertos was a way we could do this while celebrating our families and strong women from the past who were role models to us. MATERIALS NEEDED FOR THE EVENT

Mindfulness FairDATE
March 1, 2018 TIME Afterschool 3:30-7 LOCATION In the Gym # of GUESTS 1200 DESCRIPTION An event dedicated to showcasing the many ways in which students, parents, and staff can be mindful. We had food trucks, booths, puppies, photo booth, activities, videos, games, and community agencies and organizations. PURPOSE To bring the community together to enjoy each other while engaginging in activities to relieve stress. This event is for students, staff, parents, families and community members. Immigration WorkshopsDATE
March 1, 2018 TIME 3:30-5:30 LOCATION Different classrooms @ Cortines Sch. Of VAPA # of GUESTS 50 Parents and students from our school and neighboring schools in 3 workshops. DESCRIPTION Create a “Know Your Rights” event in which parents and students can gather information on the impact of their immigration status on their schooling, and their safety in their interactions with authorities. PURPOSE To give members of the community access to information regarding immigration (DACA, Know Your Rights, Sanctuary) and to increase community involvement by having the school be a center of community gathering. Mindfulness Presentations for Freshman SeminarsDATE
Spring Semester of 2018 TIME During Freshman Seminar Classes LOCATION Freshman Seminar Classrooms @ Cortines Sch. Of VAPA # of GUESTS 265 -between 20-30 freshman in each seminar class and their teachers and support staff DESCRIPTION Presenters come into Freshman Seminar Classes and present about mindfulness techniques and learn ways to reduce stress. PURPOSE To help freshmen have positive coping strategies to manage stress throughout high school, learn about themselves and others around them, stay in the present and not dwell on past or future. K9 ConnectionsDATE
Fall Event October 2017 Spring Event April 2018 TIME each session 2 hours daily after school for was 3 weeks LOCATION Upper Field @ Cortines Sch. Of VAPA, a classroom on campus and Students also took field trips to USC and to Northeast Animal Shelter # of GUESTS There were 6 students in each session. A graduation is held at the end of each session and students' families, peers and community are invited. DESCRIPTION Students learn how to train dogs from a shelter so that the dogs have a better chance of being adopted. PURPOSE In addition to helping dogs get adopted, the student develop skills such as reading nonverbal cues, having empathy, being assertive and communicating clearly. These skills are transferable to their lives as they learn to make a resume and participate in mock job interviews. MATERIALS NEEDED FOR THE EVENT

We ate together, did icebreakers, trained on the Classroom presentations on Mindfulness, worked on Project Planners, did Qi Gong and had a presentation on self esteem from our special guests PURPOSE Create a cohesive team and decide on the direction for our projects MATERIALS NEEDED FOR THE EVENT
